Bob Downs says "When I first became a lawyer, I
wanted to make a positive impact on society. As a general practice lawyer who was active
in my community, I was drafted into politics and served in the Illinois House of
Representatives with award-winning distinction. In the end, however, I decided that the
best way I could help people was in the field of family law – as a practicing
attorney and a leader in reform issues.
Later, Bob Downs’ wife and partner, Barbara Downs
(who helped put Bob through law school), joined the practice. With an LLM in taxation,
Barbara brings a strong financial background to our firm. Today, Downs Law Offices, not
the largest family law firm in town, has a reputation for being high-quality practitioners
of all aspects of family law.

We believe in telling clients the truth, rather than just saying what they want to hear in
order to be retained or during the handling of their case. There are no unrealistic
expectations or games. We take time to educate clients on the mechanics of their cases and

An influence on Illinois family
law
Bob Downs, who was the first family lawyer in 20
years to become President of the Illinois State Bar Association, has helped bring changes
in state legislation regarding family law. As a member of the Illinois State Bar
Association Family Law Section, Barbara also works to make Illinois family laws more
family friendly. Areas of current reform efforts are divorce child support, custody laws,
and attorney's fees.
