Bob Downs says as a lawyer, I always wanted to make a positive impact on society. First, as a general practice lawyer who was active in my community, I was drafted into politics and served in the Illinois House of Representatives with award-winning distinction. In time, however, I realized that the best way I could help people and lead reform efforts was in the field of family law.

Today, Downs Law Offices may not be the largest family law firm in town but they have a reputation for being high-quality practitioners of all aspect of family law.

First, we believe in telling clients the truth, rather than just what they want to hear in order to be retained. We take time to educate clients on the mechanics of their cases and involve them in the process. For our associates, interns, and support staff, every case is a team effort for us.

Likewise, professionalism and civility are important core values to effective divorce representation to the firm. Sadly, while not always possible, we encourage good relationships with opposing lawyers and parties, because it aids settlement. We don’t churn fees by engaging in unnecessary litigation; it not only increases costs, unnecessarily aggravating relations between parties.

Bob, who was the first family lawyer in 20 years to become President of the Illinois State Bar Association, has helped bring changes in state legislation regarding family law. Areas of current reform efforts are divorce child support, custody laws, and attorney's fees.

We try to get people through the process with the least damage possible and a positive outlook. That’s the greatest satisfaction we could have. We love what we do and hope it shows.
